Hazardous Areas

Aotea Electric are able to inspect, certify and rectify hazardous areas whether in a paint shop environment or where dangerous chemicals are stored. Businesses using or storing volatile or inflammable materials need to ensure that electrical design installations and maintenance comply with hazardous area standards and practices. Non-compliance can expose a business and its owners to claims under the Occupational Health & Safety Act.

Inflammable materials include:

  • Printing inks
  • Thinners
  • Paints
  • Chemicals
  • Petrol
  • Gas

Testing and Tagging

New Zealand electrical safety regulations require that employers must implement regular inspections and testing of specified electrical equipment, when such equipment is made available for use by staff. Other than the legal requirement, the main reason is SAFETY. You can't afford not to do everything within your power to ensure that you and your employees are made as safe as possible.

By having all of your industrial electrical equipment inspected, tested and tagged on a regular basis you are enabling any damaged or unsafe equipment to be found and repaired or removed before anyone is seriously injured or killed by it, as well as preventing any potential damage to your business premises. All electrical equipment connected to the electrical supply by a flexible cord and/or connecting device, which is already in service, has been serviced or repaired, is returning to service from a second-hand sale, or is available for hire. The interval between testings depends on what type of environment the equipment is to be used in.

Aotea Electric's Test & Tag service includes:

  • Register of your electrical equipment
  • Record of formal inspections and tests
  • Repair register
  • Record of all faulty equipment showing details of services or corrective actions

Thermal Imaging

Thermal imaging uses a very specialised camera along with real time computer analysis to capture snapshots of any physical entity under any conditions. A colour enhanced image is produced which has a full temperature scale. This image shows any hotspots in the area to be analysed. A comprehensive report aligns the thermal image beside a digital photograph of the area to best observe any potential problems (see below). Any issues will be identified, along with suitable solutions.

Due to recent advancements in technology this has become more affordable across all facets of the industry. The benefits far outweigh the report cost. They include:

  • Insurance requirements
  • Cost effective and proven
  • Preventative maintenance
  • Motor & pump bearing problems
  • Motor winding problems
  • Hot fuses or switchgear
  • Building heat loss issues
  • Electrical troubleshooting
